Hard drive from Vista/7 computer on external USB case won’t read or recognize on XP?
Here’s my situation. I hope you can help- it’s urgent.
I used to have an Acer laptop with Windows Vista eventually upgraded to 7. It broke down- motherboard as per usual. Now I need a new laptop which I’m in the process of acquiring. I took its hard drive and a relative put it onto an external HDD enclosure- iMicro 2.5″ SATA brand I believe. I need to salvage some urgent college-related files that I was sadly unable to backup due to the laptop failing on me. Technically, as far as I know, it was supposed to work. The drive should have been read by our Windows XP desktop that we’re using as a backup- I was gonna format the drive anyway. But there’s a problem: it won’t read. I plug it in a USB port and the desktop won’t read it at all- not even on Device Manager does it show up. Is it because I need to plug it onto a Vista laptop? What gives?

Nothing like what u say , it should have been detected automatically.
Either ur hdd has failed or just the external case is having connector problems.
also possible if u have installed some data protecttion s/w.
Since u r using a desktop to get back the data , try connecting the hdd as a second drive.
U can check if it is detected in bios then read the info from xp

HDD not detected at the time of formatting.?
before formatting the BIOS detected & showed the HDD id,but at the time of formatting a messege states”setup can’t access the HDD”.Then i’ve used the 2nd SATA port in motherboard and seen the BIOS detects the HDD,but failed to format for the 2nd time & the same error messege is displayed.”the HDD is not installed”.what should i do?plz help.
HDD is of 250 GB Seagate,there are already 6 partitions.one of 25GB & rest is of 45GB each.
You need to create a partition first. Untill you do It will not be seen by anything but your BIOS
