With the launch of dual Xeon chip for blade servers heart, Intel has also increased the ability of companies to save money in terms of low consumption energy and higher reliability.
Studies indicate a blade server can reduce power and cooling costs 15 to 25 per cent of responding to the needs of customers concerned. Dual-core/dual-processor capabilities are ideal for a wide range of low power communications and embedded applications.
Blade-server is: Even the leaves that do not use low-power processors can reduce overall power requirements and rack cooling, removing to play infrastructure components of many that use electricity are included in 1U and 2U rack.
A blade server can only consume half or two thirds of the power traditional 1U and 2U rackmount equivalent processing power. The reason is that the consolidation of resources contributes to saving blade servers economy of scale. For example, instead of having 10 500-watt supply for 10 traditional 1U servers, a blade server can have two deliveries of 2,000 watts.
With all the support gear removed and placed in the shared chassis, blade servers is much smaller. With the small size, the blade server can be installed heat in the chassis, which provides power and cooling. Therefore, the chassis offers a great shared a more efficient use of space and power.
Add processors, the new low-power efficiency of a single chassis and blade servers become a more attractive option for server consolidation projects.
The three new Xeon chips for servers launched this year by Intel are Sossaman (released March 14), Dempsey (23 May) and Woodcrest (June 26).
Xeon chips combine the advantages of two distinct cores of high-delivery performance with power management features to deliver intelligent significantly higher performance per watt based on previous single-based platforms – the Intel Xeon processor. What follows is a brief explanation of each:
Sossaman (also known as low-voltage Xeon) uses about 30 watts of power and is rated at 31 watts of thermal design power (TDP). That the packages of two to four times the performance per watt than its predecessor, a 55-watt version with one heart of Intel's Xeon chip called "Irwindale".
The processor is available in 2.0 GHz and 1.66 GHz, and offers speeds of 32-bit addresses instead of 64 bits (as it derives from a chip for laptops). Has speed front-side bus of 667 MHz and the L2 cache size of 2 GB.
Within about a month apart, Dempsey (Dual-Core Xeon 5000 series) and Woodcrest (Dual-Core Xeon 5100) were released by Intel. The release of Woodcrest Dempsey made some believe, based on the Bensley "Intel" server platform, was immediately obsolete. However, Intel has sold Dempsey as a low cost alternative to Woodcrest.
The biggest portal with Dempsey Woodcrest Woodcrest is that it consumes much less power and dissipates less heat than Dempsey because micro architecture – has been highly optimized to reduce energy consumption. Woodcrest is available in three varieties, 40W TDP optimized versions leaves the 65W TDP parts integration and part 3GHz top tray which has a 80W TDP.
All the pieces fall below 3 GHz in the range of 65W or 40W TDP. By comparison, top tray Parties Dempsey had a 130W TDP, and midrange parts were classified into 95 W, and massive power needs and the thermal problems have been excluded Dempsey uses a knife.
In addition, Woodcrest has also improved sleep states and reproduction clock contributing to lower average power consumption.
Dempsey speed ranges between 2.67 and 3.73 GHz Some models have a FSB speed of 667 MHz while others have a 1066 MHz FSB
Woodcrest, Intel Core microarchitecture first to be launched to increase by 80 percent return while reduces energy consumption 20 percent compared with the Pentium D.
It has a 1333MHz FSB in most models, except for 5110 and 5120, with an FSB of 1066 MHz, with the fastest processor at 3.0 GHz results. All use of Woodcrest LGA 771 and all except the 5160 and 5148LV have a TDP of 65W, which is much lower than the previous generation 130 W. The 5160 has a TDP of 80W, although less than 130 W.
Intel has begun shipping to customers the next generation Intel Server Systems Server Boards and Server Chassis with Dual-Core Xeon 5000 and 5100 (Dempsey and Woodcrest).
The use of blade servers is advantageous for small and large companies. For smaller operations, one or several individual servers are often the most cost-effective to support a small network. In large facilities, particularly those that are expected to grow rapidly in capacity, blade server architecture offers greater impact and easy scalability.
In summary, blade servers – with the latest Intel Xeon dual-core – to increase reliability, decrease energy consumption, and are the choice logical for a company to save money and improve management.
